About
This project is for a student who wants to study how to make 2D nanomaterials, which are actually flakes of material that have a thickness of only one or two atoms. This type of green hydrogen production can help us reduce our dependency on fossil fuels, and move towards a low-carbon economy.
Hydrogen is a renewable energy source, and photocatalysis can split water (with the use of a catalyst) to create hydrogen gas.
The goal of this Ph.D. project is to design, engineer, and validate high-performance 2D nanomaterials in order to produce clean hydrogen gas. The 2D nanomaterials will be made using an environmentally friendly, rapid, and controllable synthetic process
The project will make use of facilities that research Materials Synthesis (CHFS), Characterization (Raman, XRD, AFM, SEM, UV- Vis spectroscopy, steady-state, and time-resolved spectroscopy), H2 production and testing (solar light simulator and gas chromatography).
These facilities will help students learn how to make 2D nanomaterials for green hydrogen production. This research is important because it can help us find cleaner and more sustainable ways to produce energy.
Eligibility
Applicants must be of outstanding academic merit and should have (or be expected to gain) either a 1st class Honours degree or an upper second class (or the international equivalent)or an MSc with distinction in a related field such as Chemistry, Materials Science, or Engineering related disciplines.
